Many people call it a living fossil because it looks like sharks from long ago. It has a long, eel-like body and a dark-brown or grey color. The shark gets its name from the throat area. It has six pairs of gill slits that look like a fleshy frill.

It practices diel vertical migration to eat. This means it stays deep during the day but swims up to the surface at night. The shark eats bony fish, small sharks, and cephalopods. To catch them, it curls its tail against a rock. It moves like an eel to lunge at its prey.

A zoologist named Ludwig Döderlein first identified this species. Later, a scientist named Samuel Garman published a famous description in 1884. He named it Chlamydoselachus anguineus, which means eel-like shark with frills. Garman thought the shark was related to ancient sharks from the Devonian period. Other scientists had different ideas about its family tree. They looked at its unique teeth and its skeleton to find its history.

There are many specific facts about how these sharks live and grow.

The shark has 300 needle-like teeth that are shaped like a trident. A female shark can grow much larger than a male shark. In Suruga Bay, Japan, they are often found at depths of 200 to 600 meters. They can also be found much deeper in the dark water. Mother sharks carry their babies inside egg capsules in their bodies. This process can last up to 3.5 years. A mother might give birth to a litter of 2 to 15 pups.

Learning about the frilled shark helps us understand the history of our planet.

Its body shape has stayed almost the same for millions of years. It has lived in the seas since the Late Cretaceous period. This is much longer than many other animals we know today. When you see a shark with many teeth, think of the frilled shark. It shows us how life can change very little over a long time. It is a wonderful link to the ancient world.
