Cow sharks belong to a family called Hexanchidae. These sharks are very special because they are considered the most primitive of all sharks. This means their bodies are very similar to ancient sharks from long ago. Their skeletons look like those of extinct sharks. Their digestive and waste systems are also unspecialized. This suggests they may look like their very early ancestors.

The most famous thing about them is how they breathe. Most sharks have five gill slits on their necks. Cow sharks have a sixth gill slit. Two types of cow sharks even have a seventh slit. These extra slits are their most distinctive feature. The first pair of slits are not connected across the throat. This makes them stand out from every other shark in the sea.

These sharks have a very specific body shape. They are shaped like a cylinder. Their mouths are located on the bottom of their heads. The teeth in the lower jaw are small and look like a comb. The teeth in the upper jaw are smaller and pointed. They have a short dorsal fin that has no spines. Their tail fin has a notch near the end.

Cow sharks have a unique way of having babies. They are ovoviviparous. This means the mother keeps the egg cases inside her body. The babies hatch while they are still inside the mother. When they are ready to eat, they look for food. They eat large fish and even other sharks. They also eat crustaceans and carrion, which is dead animal meat.

Scientists learn about these sharks through fossils. Most of what we know comes from finding isolated teeth. Some skeletal remains have been found in very rare places. These include the Late Jurassic limestones of South Germany. They have also been found in Lebanon. A possible tooth was found in Japan from the Permian period. Because fossils are so rare, some scientists think cow sharks are actually very diverse and numerous today.
