Leptostraca

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Leptostraca are small animals that live in the ocean. They are a type of crustacean. Their name comes from Greek words that mean thin and shell. These creatures are very important to science. They are the only living members of a group called Phyllocarida. Scientists also think they are the most primitive members of the Malacostraca class. This means they are very old types of living things.

These animals have a very special way of working. They use eight pairs of legs to find food. These legs look like small leaves. They are used for filter-feeding, which means they catch tiny food from the water. They do not use these legs to swim. A hard shell called a carapace covers their head and middle body. This shell has two parts called valves. The shell also works as a brood pouch. It keeps developing babies safe inside.

We can learn about these animals from the past. They first appear in the fossil record during the Cambrian period. This was a very long time ago. One ancient kind was called Ceratiocaris. It lived during the Silurian period. This creature could grow to 75 cm long. Most living Leptostraca are much smaller. The species Nebaliopsis typica only reaches 4 cm.

There are about 40 different species of these animals today. They live in many places around the world. For example, Nebalia bipes lives in the Arctic and sub-Arctic. Some live in the North Atlantic Ocean. Others live in the Mediterranean Sea or the Red Sea. You can find them in Antarctica too. One species, Nebalia antarctica, lives there. Another, Nebaliaella extrema, also lives in Antarctica.

Leptostraca are easy to spot if you know what to look for. They have eyes on stalks. They also have two pairs of antennae. These antennae help them feel their surroundings. They have gills on their legs to help them breathe. They also breathe through a thin membrane inside their shell. When they are babies, they look like small adults. This stage is called a manca. They just lack a full shell at first.
