Ostracods are tiny animals often called seed shrimp.

They belong to a group of animals called crustaceans. Scientists have identified about 33,000 different species of them. Only 13,000 of these species are still living today. Most are very small, but some can be larger. For example, a marine type called Gigantocypris is quite big. The largest freshwater kind is named Megalocypris princeps. It can grow up to 8 mm in length.

These animals have a special way they grow and move. Their bodies are covered by a shell called a carapace. This shell has two parts called valves. These valves look like the shell of a clam. The shell is made of chitin and often calcium carbonate. In some species, the shell starts as two separate buds. As they grow, the two halves meet in the middle. Other kinds start as one piece that folds in half.

Ostracods have been part of Earth for a very long time. They are the most common arthropods found in fossils. We can find their fossils from the early Ordovician period until now. Some fossils are even 100 million years old. In 2013, researchers in Queensland, Australia, found special fossils. These specimens showed very well preserved soft tissue. They even set a Guinness World Record for the oldest penis.

There are many different places where these creatures live. Some live in the salty ocean. Others live in freshwater lakes or even hot springs. Some can live in water that is almost freezing. Others live in very acidic water with a pH of 3.4. They can even live in deep sea areas. One genus, called Krithe, lives 9,307 meters deep.

Scientists use these tiny animals to learn about the past. They use a method called mutual ostracod temperature range. This helps them guess what old water temperatures were like. They look at the ratio of oxygen and magnesium in the shells. This tells them about old ice volumes and water history. Ostracods are also great indicators of old environments. Because they are small and easy to preserve, they tell a big story.
