Ostracods are a diverse class of small crustaceans often referred to as seed shrimp.

Scientists have identified approximately 33,000 species within this group, though only 13,000 are currently extant. They are categorized into seven valid orders based on their specific physical structures. Most ostracods are very small, but sizes vary significantly across different environments. The marine genus Gigantocypris is notably large for the group. In freshwater settings, the largest known species is Megalocypris princeps, which reaches 8 mm in length.

The defining feature of an ostracod is its protective carapace. This structure consists of two valves that resemble the shell of a clam. The shell is primarily composed of chitin and often includes calcium carbonate. However, some planktonic forms and the family Entocytheridae lack calcium carbonate entirely. The development of these valves varies between different orders. In the order Myodocopida, the carapace begins as two independent buds that meet in the middle as they grow. Conversely, in the order Palaeocopida, the carapace starts as a single element that folds at the midline during growth.

Ostracod anatomy is specialized for survival in various aquatic habitats. Their bodies consist of a head and a thorax, though they lack clear segmentation in most species. The head is the largest section and features four pairs of appendages. These include two pairs of antennae used for swimming, as well as mandibles and maxillae. The thorax contains three primary pairs of appendages with different roles. For example, the first pair may be used for feeding in Cypridoidea or walking in Cytheroidea. The second pair is mainly used for movement, while the third pair is used for walking, cleaning, or may be absent entirely.

Biological processes like respiration and waste removal are handled through specialized structures. All ostracods possess ventilatory appendages that beat rhythmically to create water currents. This maintains a flow between the body and the inner carapace. In the largest subclass, Podocopa, organisms lack a heart and circulatory system. Instead, they perform gas exchange across their entire body surface. Members of the Myodocopa subclass are different because they possess a heart. Some even have lamellar gills or a circulatory system using hemolymph sinuses to absorb oxygen.

The fossil record for ostracods is incredibly rich and spans from the early Ordovician to the present day. They are considered the most common arthropods found in fossils. This makes them invaluable for biozonation, which is the process of using fossils to date marine rock layers. In 2013, a discovery in Queensland, Australia, provided a rare look at ancient life. Researchers found male and female specimens with well-preserved soft tissue. These fossils were approximately 100 million years old and set a Guinness World Record for the oldest fossilized penis.

Ostracods are also famous for unique reproductive traits and survival strategies. Some species, particularly in the family Cyprididae, produce drought-resistant eggs. These eggs can remain dormant during extreme temperatures or when water disappears. This allows them to hatch only when conditions become favorable again. In the Myodocopida order, many species practice brood care by releasing offspring as first instars. This supports a pelagic lifestyle, meaning they live in the open water. In other groups, eggs are simply glued to surfaces like vegetation or the seafloor.

Beyond biology, ostracods are essential tools for paleoclimatic reconstruction. Scientists use a method called mutual ostracod temperature range, or MOTR, to study the past. By analyzing the ratio of oxygen-18 to oxygen-16 and magnesium to calcium in the calcite valves, researchers can infer ancient environments. These chemical ratios provide data regarding global ice volumes, water temperatures, and historical hydrological regimes.

Because they are widespread and easily preserved, these tiny creatures help us understand the history of Earth's oceans and freshwater systems.
