Sawshark

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The sawshark is a truly unique kind of fish. It belongs to a group called Pristiophoriformes. These sharks are famous for having a long snout called a rostrum. This snout looks just like a saw. It has sharp teeth along the edges to help them hunt. The teeth often switch between large and small sizes. This special tool helps them slash and disable their prey.

Sawsharks use several clever ways to find food in the dark. They have two long feelers called barbels halfway down their snout. They also have special sensory organs called ampullae of Lorenzini. These organs can detect an electric field from buried prey. Once they find something, they might swipe their snout side-to-side. This action can cripple small fish, squid, or crustaceans. Their yellow-brown skin helps them blend into the sandy ocean floor.

Scientists have identified ten different species of sawsharks. Some belong to the genus Pristiophorus, which usually has five gill slits. Others belong to the genus Pliotrema, which has six gill slits. For example, the Japanese sawshark lives near Japan and China. The African dwarf sawshark was discovered near Mozambique in 2011. Lana's sawshark was named after Lana Ebert in 1966.

These sharks have very interesting ways of growing. They are ovoviviparous, which means their eggs hatch inside the mother. A mother can have a litter of 3 to 22 pups every two years. After a 12-month pregnancy, the pups are born at 30 cm long. While inside, the pups' teeth point backward so they do not hurt the mother. Most sawsharks are thought to live for 10 years or more.

It is easy to confuse a sawshark with a sawfish. However, they are actually very different animals. A sawfish is a type of ray, not a shark. You can tell them apart by looking at their gills. Sawsharks have gill slits on the sides of their heads. Sawfish have their gill slits on their underside. Sawsharks also have alternating teeth, while sawfish have teeth that are all the same size.
