Bigeye fish are a special family of marine animals. They belong to a group called Priacanthidae. This family includes 18 different species of ray-finned fish.

Many people call them bigeyes because of their large eyes. These eyes help them live a nocturnal life. This means they are active during the night. They are also carnivores, so they eat other animals.

Most of these fish are a bright red color. Some species show patterns of silver, black, or dusky brown.

These fish have a very specific way of living. Most bigeyes live in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. However, four species live in the Atlantic Ocean. These four are Cookeolus japonicus, Heteropriacanthus cruentatus, Priacanthus arenatus, and Pristigenys alta.

They like to stay near reefs or rocky areas. A few species prefer to swim in open water. Many bigeyes live in very deep water. This water is often too deep for scuba divers to reach. Some people even catch these fish to use for food.

We can learn about their history from old fossils. The earliest fossils of Priacanthidae are quite old. They date back to the middle Eocene epoch. This was during the lower Tertiary period. These fossils are from about 40 to 50 million years ago.

This shows that these fish have lived in our oceans for a very long time. Scientists use these fossils to understand how life has changed.

There are many different names for these fish. Their scientific name refers to their very rough scales. These scales have sharp spines that can bite. Most species grow to about 25 centimeters in length. A few species can grow even larger than that.

The family is split into four groups called genera. These are Cookeolus, Heteropriacanthus, Priacanthus, and Pristigenys. Each group has its own special members like the Moontail bullseye or the Red bigeye.

Learning about bigeyes helps us understand the ocean. They show us how animals adapt to dark places. Their large eyes are a tool for seeing at night. Their red color is another way they fit into their world.

Just like you use tools to finish a job, they use their bodies. Their spines act like a defense. Their eyes act like bright lamps in the dark. The ocean is full of these amazing details.
