Viperfish can make their own light. They use photophores, which are tiny light organs. They use these lights for two main jobs. First, they use a glowing part on a fin to lure food. This helps them catch prey like small fish or shrimp. Second, they use lights on their bellies to hide. This is called counter-illumination. The light matches the dim sun from above. This makes it hard for predators to see them.

Many viperfish travel up to the surface at night. This is called diel vertical migration. They go to find food. They can survive very big changes in water temperature. They are found in oceans all around the world.
