Barreleye

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The barreleye is a small fish. It lives in deep ocean waters. These fish are often called spookfish.

Barreleyes have very special eyes. Their eyes are shaped like tubes. These eyes usually point up. This helps them see the dark shapes of food above. Some barreleyes can also look forward. Their eyes are inside a clear dome on their head. This dome protects their eyes. It may also help them see better in the dark.

Many barreleyes have a dark body. Some have shiny scales. Other types are clear like glass.

Some species have special parts that glow. They use tiny bacteria to make this light. This is called bioluminescence, or living light. They use this light to hide. It helps them blend in with the light from above. This way, predators looking up cannot see them easily.

Barreleyes live very deep. They stay in parts of the ocean with very little light. Their eggs float in the water. The young fish drift with the currents. When they grow up, they sink to the deep water.
