Sunlight cannot reach this deep. It starts where less than one percent of light gets through. Above this area is the photic zone. That is the part of the water with plenty of light.

Most of the ocean is in the aphotic zone. It can be very cold there. The depth changes based on many things. In clear, tropical water, light goes deeper. Near the poles, light does not go as far. Cloudy water can also block the light.

Many animals live here. Some make their own light. This is called bioluminescence. They use this light to find food or see. The anglerfish uses a light lure to catch prey. Some animals swim up to find food at night. This is a huge nightly migration. It is the largest on our planet. Most food comes from dead things sinking from above. Some tiny life uses chemicals for power instead of light.
