This temperature changes based on where you are. It also changes with the seasons. The sun warms the top layer of water. In the tropics, the surface can be very hot. Near the poles, the water is cold and near the ice.

Deep ocean water is very different. It makes up about 90% of the ocean. This water is cold and salty. It stays at a steady 0 to 3°C. This water moves in a big way called thermohaline circulation. This is a set of steps where water moves because of its density. Density is how heavy water is for its size. Warm water is light and stays on top. Cold water is heavy and sinks deep down. This movement helps move water all around the world.

Today, the oceans are warming up. This is due to climate change. The top layers are warming the fastest. However, the heat is moving deeper into the sea. In 2022, the ocean was the hottest ever recorded. This warming can change how much oxygen the water holds.
