Most live near coral or rock reefs. They have short, plump bodies. They do not have scales. Instead, their skin can be bumpy.

This helps them hide. Many frogfishes use camouflage to blend in. They can look like stones, sponges, or even seaweed. Some can even change their color! This can last for weeks.

Frogfishes are clever hunters. They use a special tool to find food. They have a rod on their head called an illicium. This rod has a lure on the end called an esca.

The lure looks like a tasty snack. When a small fish swims near, the frogfish strikes. This happens very fast, in just 6 milliseconds!

These fish do not swim much. They use their fins to walk on the sea floor. They can move like they are walking on two legs.

Some even use jet propulsion. They gulp water and push it out through their gills to move.
