These fish are carnivores. This means they eat other fish and small sea creatures. They are ambush predators. They hide in reefs and wait for food. Then they dart out to grab it. Many of these fish have bright colors. This color acts as disruptive camouflage. This helps them hide, just like a tiger's stripes. Some fish in this group can change sex. They start life as females. Later, they change into males. This is called protogynous hermaphroditism. These fish make many eggs. The tiny babies are called larvae. They float in ocean currents. They drift until they are ready to live on the reef. Scientists used to put more fish in this family. New studies split some groups into their own families.
