There are over 600 different species. Most are small, but the humphead wrasse can grow very big.

These fish are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They mostly eat small sea animals. Some wrasses are very smart. They use rocks as tools. They smash hard shells on rocks to reach the food inside.

Some wrasses act like helpers. They work at cleaning stations on coral reefs.

The cleaner wrasse eats tiny pests off larger fish. This helps the bigger fish stay healthy.

Many wrasses can also change their sex. Most start as females. The largest fish can become males. This helps them live in groups. Some species are born as one sex and stay that way. Others can change based on their needs. Wrasses live in warm waters, but some live in cooler areas like Norway.
