Their findings suggested that Serranines and Anthiadines were nested with certain Scorpaeniformes. These included groups like Ablabys and Hoplichthys. Meanwhile, they found that Epinephelines were outside that larger clade. Recent studies have moved these groups into the Percoidei instead of with scorpaenoids. These findings are now accepted by authorities like the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).

Today, the family is defined by its remaining members and their evolutionary connections. The genus Centropristis is considered sister to all other currently defined serranids. This means it is the closest relative to the rest of the group. Other recognized genera include Serranus, Hypoplectrus, and Paralabrax.

Even fossil records provide clues, such as the genus Paleoserranus. While once placed in this family, it is now suggested to be a basal perciform. These shifting definitions show how science constantly refines our understanding of the natural world.
