A monophyletic group is one that includes an ancestor and all its descendants. Modern studies show that including the genus Spicara makes the family monophyletic. This means Centracanthidae is now considered a junior synonym of Sparidae.
There is incredible variety in the size and number of these fish. The family contains about 155 species across 38 different genera. The two largest species are the white steenbras and the red steenbras. The smallest member of the family is the cherry seabream.
Finally, the history of Sparidae is written in the fossil record. Scientists have discovered many fossil genera from millions of years ago. For example, Sparnodus is a fossil seabream from the early Eocene of Italy. Other fossils, like Ctenodentex, come from the middle Eocene of Belgium.
