The titan triggerfish is large enough to move big rocks to find food.

These ancient fish may have reached lengths of up to 100 centimeters. 
Triggerfish exhibit complex social and reproductive behaviors. Many species are known for being quite aggressive. For example, the Picasso triggerfish and titan triggerfish defend their nests fiercely. They will protect their territory against intruders, including human divers. Male triggerfish often establish territories to ensure they can reproduce. Some males, such as the species Balistes carolinensis, build hollow nests. These males often practice polygyny. This means one male mates with multiple females in his territory. In the Izu Islands of Japan, one crosshatch triggerfish has had up to three females at once.
Spawning and parental care are also highly organized. Spawning is often timed with lunar cycles and tides. For instance, eggs appear a few days before a full or new moon. Both parents participate in caring for the fertilized eggs. This is known as biparental egg care. The eggs are demersal, meaning they are laid on the sea bottom. They are very small, measuring only 0.5 to 0.6 mm in diameter. The female stays near the eggs to guard them. She also performs a behavior called "tending." During tending, she rolls, fans, or blows water on the eggs to provide oxygen. This helps the embryos hatch safely.
