They belong to a group called Pomacanthidae. This name comes from Greek words meaning "cover" and "thorn." These fish have strong spines on their gill covers. This helps set them apart from butterflyfish.

Most species live in shallow water. They are active during the day. At night, they hide in cracks in the reef.

These fish come in many sizes. The gray angelfish can grow very long. Other small fish stay under 4 inches. Many species change color as they grow. A young Blue Angelfish is bright blue. As an adult, it turns gray.

Angelfish help the reef stay healthy. Many species eat sponges. This stops sponges from covering the coral.

Some fish live in pairs. Others live in groups called harems. A harem has one male and many females. If the male is gone, a female can turn into a male. This is called protogyny. They also lay many tiny eggs in the water. The eggs float with the ocean currents until they hatch.
