Dragonet

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Dragonets are small fish with bright colors. They live in warm ocean waters. Most stay near the sandy bottom.

These fish have long bodies without scales. Some have a sharp spine. This spine can be venomous, which means it can cause harm.

Males and females look very different. This is called sexual dimorphism. Males have very long fins. They also have bright colors. Females have a lower jaw that sticks out.

Dragonets spawn in the late afternoon. They swim up from the sand in two steps. First, they rise about 15 centimeters. Then they rest for five seconds. Next, they rise again. During this rise, they let out eggs and milt. The eggs float in the water. They drift away with the ocean currents.

Dragonets eat tiny sea life. They find food on blades of sea grass. They use their jaws to grab food. To hide, they quickly bury themselves in the sand. Only their eyes stay visible.
