Tilefish are small fish that live in the sea.

They like shallow water near coral reefs. Most live in water less than 50 meters deep. You can find them in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Some live in warm water. Others live in cool water.

These fish have long bodies. They have long fins on their tops and bottoms. Some tilefish are very bright. For example, the purple sand tilefish is a vibrant color. The blue blanquillo is another kind. This fish can even swim in brackish water. Brackish water is a mix of fresh and salt water.

Tilefish like to stay near the bottom. They make homes in burrows or caves. They may also hide in piles of rock. If a fish feels scared, it dives into its home. Some fish, like the chameleon sand tilefish, can change color fast. This helps them hide from predators.

Tilefish use their good eyes to find food. They eat small things that live on the sea floor. They like to eat crabs and shrimp. They also eat worms, snails, and sea urchins.

Some tilefish live in groups. Others live in pairs. The pastel tilefish builds large mounds of rubble. These mounds help other reef animals too.
