Some damselfish are very protective of their space. They guard a territory, which is a special area they call home. Longfin damselfish even act like farmers. They protect tiny mysid shrimp on the reef. These shrimp help the fish by making the algae grow better.

When it is time to have babies, males do special things. In one kind, males do a signal jump. They swim up and then dart back down fast. Females listen to the sounds the males make. They pick mates that jump with the most power. Some males even eat some of their own eggs. This happens if the eggs are too small to be worth the work of guarding them.
