Danionin

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Danionins are a group of small, slender fish. They live in fresh water. Most live in South and Southeast Asia. Some live in Africa too. Many of these fish have bright colors. You might see stripes, spots, or bars on them. Some even have long barbels. These are tiny whisker-like parts near the mouth.

In the wild, these fish are carnivores. This means they eat meat. They hunt for insects and small crustaceans. They breed during the rainy season. They do this by scattering their eggs.

Many people keep danionins in aquariums. They are active swimmers. They like to stay in the top half of the tank. They eat almost any fish food. However, they do not eat plants or algae. They are good to keep with other fish. They are boisterous, which means they are lively. They might chase each other, but they do not usually attack.

Be careful with your tank. These fish are good jumpers. You should use a tight lid. They can also get stressed by bright light or fast water. They like calm water. Some of these fish live in water made acidic by peat. This happens when leaves fall from trees above.
