The Cyprinidae family is a huge group of fish.

They live in fresh water. This family is the largest group of vertebrates on Earth. There are about 1,780 different species in this group. They live in North America, Africa, and Eurasia.

These fish do not have teeth in their jaws. Instead, they have pharyngeal teeth. These are special teeth located in their throats. They use these teeth to chew food against a bony plate in their skull.

This helps them eat hard things like snails.

Most of these fish eat plants or tiny bugs. However, some species are predators that eat other fish.

People also keep many of them as pets. The goldfish is a very famous example. You might also see colorful koi in a pond.
