Danionin

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Danionins are a group of small, slender fish. They belong to the family Danionidae. Most of these fish live in fresh waters. You can find them mostly in South and Southeast Asia. A few species also live in Africa. Many people love them because they have bright colors. Some fish have horizontal stripes on their bodies. Others have rows of spots or vertical bars. Some even have long barbels, which are whisker-like parts near the mouth.

These fish have a specific way of living and eating. They are carnivores, so they eat meat. In the wild, they hunt for insects and small crustaceans. When it is time to have babies, they are egg scatterers. This means they spread their eggs into the water. They usually do this during the rainy season.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these fish. For much of the 20th century, research was always changing. Many fish were first put into the genus Danio. Later, a scientist named George S. Myers split them into different groups. He created the names Brachydanio and Daniops. In 2009, researchers named Fang et al. used DNA to study them. Their work helped group the fish into three main clades. These clades are called Danio, Devario, and a group with Esomus.

There are many different types of danionins. The group includes many subfamilies. One is called Chedrinae, which includes troutbarbs. Another is Rasborinae, which includes carplets. The Danioninae subfamily includes the famous Danio and Devario. Some fish are very small, like the Danionella. Other fish, like the Celestial Pearl Danio, are very popular. This fish is also called the Galaxy Rasbora. It is closely related to the Microrasbora erythromicron.

Many people keep these fish in home aquariums. They are active swimmers that stay in the top half of a tank. They are boisterous, which means they are very lively. They might chase each other, but they are good community fish. They do not usually attack other fish. You must use a tight lid because they are good jumpers. They also like calm water. In nature, they live in water made acidic by peat. This happens when leaves fall from a thick canopy of trees.
