Featherbacks are a family of fish. People also call them knifefishes. They have long and thin bodies. This shape looks like a knife. They live in fresh water. They also live in brackish water. This is water that is a mix of fresh and salt. You can find them in Africa and Asia.

These fish swim in a special way. They keep their bodies very stiff. Then they move a long fin on their bottom. This is called an anal fin. The fin ripples to push them. They can move forward or backward. They also have a swim bladder. This is a part inside them that helps them float. This part can take in oxygen from the air. It can even make sounds. The fish squeezes air through a small path to make noise.

Some species are used for food. Other fish are kept as pets in tanks. Some fish even build nests. They guard their eggs until they hatch. Fossils of these fish are very old. They are from about 70 million years ago.
