Many butterflyfish have very bright colors. They can be red, blue, yellow, or orange. Some have dark stripes or spots. These spots can look like the wings of a butterfly. Their bodies are thin and tall. This helps them stand out in the reef. Some fish use these colors to talk to other fish.

Most butterflyfish are active during the day. They like to stay in one home area. Some species eat coral polyps. These are tiny living parts of the coral. Other fish eat zooplankton, which are tiny floating animals. At night, these fish hide in cracks in the reef. They even change their colors when it is dark.

Baby butterflyfish go through a special stage called tholichthys. This is a time when their bodies are covered in hard, bony plates. They lose these plates as they grow up.

Butterflyfish lay many eggs in the water. The eggs float with the ocean currents. They hatch into tiny fish called fry.
