One of their most special parts is a long fin. This fin looks like a whip. Their name, Zanclus, comes from a Greek word for a sickle. This name describes their curved fin. Their other name, cornutus, means horned. This refers to small bony bumps above their eyes.

Moorish idols mostly eat sponges. Sponges make up about 70% of what they eat. They also eat algae and coral. Most of the time, they live in small groups. However, they can also swim in large schools. In a place called Palau, they gather in huge groups. Hundreds of fish swim together to spawn, which means they make eggs. This event is very risky. Many sharks wait to hunt the schools. Only a few fish might survive the sharks. This makes the event seem very dangerous. Even so, these fish are found in many parts of the ocean.
