It is mostly silver or white. It has dark stripes on its sides. This fish is famous for how it stands. It uses long fin rays like legs. These rays can be one meter long. That is three times the length of its body! When the fish rests, it pumps fluids into these fins. This makes the fins stiff so it can stand. It stands on its pelvic fins and its tail fin. This makes a tripod shape.

The fish is not a good swimmer. It prefers to sit still on the seafloor. It faces into the water current to find food. The fish has very poor eyesight. Instead, it uses its fins to feel for prey. Small young fish eat tiny animals. Larger fish eat bigger prey like teleosts, which are bony fish. These fish live in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. They live in water that is quite cold. They can live in depths of 4,000 meters.
