The tripod fish is a very special kind of living thing. It lives in the deep, dark parts of the ocean.

People call it by many names like the tripod spiderfish. It is a famous fish because of how it stands on the seafloor. Most fish swim through the water to get around. This fish prefers to sit very still on the bottom. It is the largest member of its group. It can grow to a total length of 36 centimeters.

This fish has a very interesting way of working. It has long fin rays on its tail and its pelvic fins. These fins can grow up to one meter long. That is three times as long as its body! To stand up, the fish pumps fluids into these fins. This makes the fins stiff like legs.

The fish lands on its pelvic fins first. Then it lowers its tail fin to stay steady. This creates a tripod shape that holds it up. It faces into the water current while it rests.

Scientists have studied these fish in many different places. They have seen them in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans.

These fish live in many depths from 250 to 4,700 meters. The water there is quite cold for them. Temperatures stay between 2.7 and 13.5 degrees Celsius. They live near coastlines in Africa and North America too. They also live near Madagascar and Central America. The fish can live in many different types of water. This helps them stay widespread across the globe.

Finding food is a big job in the dark deep sea. The tripod fish has very poor eyesight. It does not use its eyes to find prey. Instead, it uses its fins to feel things.

The ends of its pectoral fins can feel for small animals. Young fish are filter feeders that eat tiny things. They eat small invertebrates like copepods and larvae. Larger fish eat bigger things like teleosts. Teleosts are a type of bony fish. About 78.7 percent of a large fish's diet is teleosts.

Making babies is also unique for this species. Each tripod fish is a simultaneous hermaphrodite. This means one fish has both male and female parts.

They mate by releasing sperm and eggs into the water. This is called external fertilization. If a fish is all alone, it can self-fertilize. This helps them reproduce even when they are far apart. This is helpful on the wide, empty abyssal plain. It ensures their kind can keep living in the deep.
