Fanfin

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Fanfin seadevils are amazing fish from the deep ocean. They belong to the family Caulophrynidae. These fish live in the dark, deep waters of the sea. You can find them in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. They live in a place called the bathypelagic zone. This is a very deep part of the ocean.

Females and males look very different from each other. Females have short, round bodies and huge mouths. Their teeth are thin and curve backward. They have long fins that look like tiny threads. These threads have sensory cells at the very tips. These cells help them feel things in the dark. Females also have a simple lure called an esca.

Two scientists first named this family in 1896. George Brown Goode and Tarleton Hoffman Bean were American ichthyologists. They gave the family the name Caulophrynidae. This name comes from the word Caulophryne. It uses words that mean "stem" and "toad." Long ago, people like Aristotle called these fish "sea-frogs."

There are two main groups in this family. One group is the genus Caulophryne. The other is the genus Robia. Only one Robia specimen has ever been caught. It was found in the Banda Sea. That fish lived at a depth of 1,000 meters. The largest species is called Caulophryne polynema.

Finding a mate is a hard job in the deep sea. Males are much smaller than the females. They have large eyes and large nostrils. They use these to smell a scent from a female. When a male finds a female, he bites her. Their bodies may fuse together into one. The male then gets food from the female's blood.
