It lives in the northern Pacific Ocean. These fish live from Alaska to Japan. They also live as far south as California.

Adult prowfish have long, flat bodies. They have a big fin on their back. This fin has 54 to 58 soft spines. They have large side fins. However, they do not have pelvic fins. Their mouth turns up slightly. Inside the mouth are small, sharp teeth.

Their heads have tiny holes for sensing. These holes often have blue or white edges.

Most prowfish live near the rocky bottom. They eat jellyfish and other soft sea life. They use their big mouths to tear pieces of jellyfish. Large fish like halibut eat the prowfish.

Young prowfish live in a different way. They do not stay near the bottom. Instead, they swim in the middle of the water. Young fish eat only jellyfish. They even hide inside large jellyfish to stay safe. Most females grow up by age five. They are often a bit heavier than males.
