Prowfish

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The prowfish is a very special kind of sea fish. It is the only living member of its family, called Zaproridae.

These fish live in the northern Pacific Ocean. They can be found from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. They go west to Kamchatka in Russia. They also live from the Bering Sea down to Hokkaidō, Japan. Some live as far south as Monterey, California. Prowfish are important to people who fish for food in remote areas.

An adult prowfish has a long and flat body. It has one high fin on its back. This dorsal fin has 54 to 58 soft spines. The fish also has a large tail fin. It has big side fins but no pelvic fins at all.

Its mouth turns up slightly and has small, sharp teeth. The head has a snout that sticks out. This shape is why the family name means "prow." The name "prow" comes from a Greek word for the front of a ship. The fish also has tiny holes on its head for sensing. These holes often have blue or white edges.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. The prowfish was described in 1896. David Starr Jordan helped name this group of fish.

We also know about extinct relatives from the past. One was found in South Korea in the Middle Miocene Duho Formation. Another was found in California in the Monterey and Modelo Formations. These older fish belonged to different groups like †Zaprora koreana and †Araeosteus rothi. These fossils help us see how fish families change over time.

Most prowfish live near the rocky bottom of the sea. They are benthic animals, which means they stay near the floor.

They eat jellyfish and other soft sea life called scyphozoans. They use their big mouths to tear chunks from jellyfish. Larger fish like Pacific halibut or skates eat the prowfish. Most female prowfish reach maturity at five years old. Females are often a bit heavier than the males.

Young prowfish live a very different life than adults. They are pelagic, which means they swim in the middle of the water.

They do not stay near the bottom like their parents. Young fish eat only jellyfish. They even hide inside the bells of large jellyfish for safety. Because of this, people sometimes mistake them for medusafish. This shows how much fish can change as they grow up.
