You can find them in the North Atlantic and the North Pacific. Many people call them pink shrimp or Nordic shrimp. They like to live on soft, muddy bottoms in deep water. Most live in water that is between 0 and 4 degrees Celsius. They also need the salt in the water to stay at a certain level. These shrimp are very important to the life of the Arctic ocean.

These shrimp have a very special way of growing up. They are born as males. After about two and a half years, their bodies change. Their testes turn into ovaries. This means they finish their lives as females. This way of changing is called protandry.

Their size can change based on how old they are. The temperature of the water also matters for their growth. Warmer water can make them grow even faster. Females can grow longer than males can.

Northern shrimp play a huge role in the Arctic food web. They eat many different things like tiny sea creatures. They are also scavengers. This means they eat bits of food left behind by others. Because they eat so many things, scientists use them to study fish. They can look at the shrimp to see what fish are nearby. This makes them a natural sampler for the ocean.

People have caught these shrimp for food since the early 1900s. In Norway, people started fishing them a long time ago. A man named Johan Hjort helped people find them. In Canada, the harvest limit was 164,000 tonnes in 2008. In New England, the fishing was very big in 1969. That year, people caught 28.3 million pounds of shrimp.

Now, the shrimp in New England are harder to find. This is because the water is getting warmer each year.

We use these shrimp for more than just eating. Some people like them because they taste sweet. You can find them in bags at the store in Canada.

Scientists also use a special tool from them called an enzyme. They get this from the shrimp to help with biology. People also use the shrimp shell to make something called chitosan. This can help treat bleeding wounds. It can also help filter wine or help soil on farms.
