You might also hear them called common shrimp or sand shrimp. These animals are very important to the oceans where they live. They help keep the underwater world healthy and balanced. They are found in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. This includes the White Sea in Russia and the coast of Morocco. They also live in the Baltic, Mediterranean, and Black Seas.

These shrimp have a clever way to stay safe. They have a sandy brown color to hide in the sea. They can even change their color to match their surroundings. During the day, they bury themselves deep in the sand. This protects them from hungry fish and birds. Only their long antennae poke out from the ground. They come out to feed at night when it is dark.

The life of a shrimp has many steps. Females reach maturity at a length of about 30 millimeters. Males reach this stage at about 25 millimeters. Tiny young shrimp hatch from eggs as planktonic larvae. These larvae float through the water for a while. They must go through five moults, which are times they shed their shells. Finally, they settle down onto the sea floor.

Humans have caught these shrimp for a very long time. In the past, people used horses to pull fishing nets. Now, some fishers in Morecambe Bay use tractors instead. In 1999, people caught over 100,000 tonnes of these shrimp. Germany and the Netherlands caught more than 80% of that total. In the UK, the catch changes every year. It can be as low as 500 tonnes or as high as 1500 tonnes.

Many people around the world enjoy eating brown shrimp. They are very popular in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark. In Belgium, people make a snack called tomate-crevettes. This is shrimp mixed with mayonnaise and parsley inside a tomato. In England, people make a dish called potted shrimps. They mix the peeled shrimp with butter and spices like nutmeg.
