People also call it the pacchero or canocchia. It lives in shallow coastal waters. You can find it in the Mediterranean Sea. It also lives in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. This shrimp is a spearer type. This means it has special front limbs. These limbs look like long, spiked spears. They help the shrimp catch soft prey. Most of these shrimp are a dull brown color. They have two brown eye spots on their tail. These spots have white circles around them.

This shrimp has a busy way of life. It digs burrows in sandy or muddy bottoms.

It stays inside its hole during the day. It comes out at night to hunt for food. It also comes out in the winter to mate. The shrimp eats many different things. It eats crabs and squid. It also eats worms and small fish. Sometimes it even eats algae. It is an opportunistic predator. This means it eats whatever food it can find nearby. Some shrimp even follow fishing boats to eat dead animals.

Making new shrimp is a long process. The mating season happens in winter and spring. In the Adriatic Sea, this peaks between February and March. In the Ligurian Sea, it peaks in April.

After laying eggs, the female must care for them. She uses a sticky liquid from her body. This liquid helps her attach eggs to her legs. The mother stays in her burrow all spring. She does not leave or even eat during this time. The eggs hatch between late spring and late summer. The tiny babies are called alima. They float in the water during the summer.

These little alima go through ten molts. A molt is when a shrimp sheds its old shell. After that, they settle on the sea floor. They grow into adults by the end of the year. Most female shrimp spawn within their second year. Some might live to a third year of life.

The shrimp lives in many places. It lives near the Nile and Po rivers. It is also found near the Ebro and Rhône rivers. It lives from the Gulf of Cádiz down to Angola. You can also find them near the Canary Islands and Madeira.

Humans catch these shrimp for food. It is the only mantis shrimp fished commercially in the Mediterranean. Over 7,000 tons are caught every year.

Most of this is caught near Italy. Spain is also a big place for catching them. Smaller fisheries exist in France, Israel, and Egypt. In the Gulf of Cadiz, people call them galera. They are often caught in nets meant for other fish. This is called by-catch. Fishing is highest in the winter. This is when the adults come out to mate.
