These creatures are part of a group called decapods. This name means they have ten legs. They also have an exoskeleton. An exoskeleton is a hard shell on the outside of their bodies. Many of these animals are important for people to eat. Some are even used in large farming systems called aquaculture.

How we name these animals can be quite confusing. People often use the words shrimp and prawn for the same things. These names do not have a strict scientific meaning. In many places, the words are used interchangeably. This means people use them to mean the same thing. However, some people use different rules to tell them apart. They look at the shape of the body and the rostrum. The rostrum is the pointed part on the head.

History shows that these names started in Britain. British usage often looks at the size and shape of the animal. For example, shrimp are often smaller species. They are often wider than they are deep. Prawns are usually the larger forms. These larger animals are often deeper than they are wide. They also tend to have a longer rostrum on their heads.

Different parts of the world use these names in different ways. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, people follow the British way. Commonwealth nations often do the same thing. In New Zealand, authors have a helpful rule of thumb. They say shrimp are usually three inches or less in length. These small shrimp are caught with nets in shallow water. Prawns can grow much larger, up to 12 inches long.

Rules also change depending on where you live. In the United States, shrimp is the more common name. People there use the word prawn less often. They mostly use it for large shrimp or those in freshwater. Australia can be a bit different too. Some Australian authors call small species prawns. Others call the banded coral shrimp a prawn. It is a very interesting way that language changes.
