Freshwater prawn farming is a type of aquaculture. This means people raise prawns in ponds to provide food for others.

These farms are often small businesses run by families. They can be better for the land than farming sea shrimp. This is because the ponds do not make the soil salty. They also do not hurt mangrove forests. The prawns live at lower densities in these ponds. This means there is less waste and less danger of disease.

The way these prawns grow is very special. Most farmed prawns are the giant river prawn. These prawns start as tiny larvae called zoeae. These babies must live in brackish water to survive. Brackish water is a mix of fresh and salty water. After about 32 to 35 days, they change into postlarvae. These are small prawns about 8 mm long. They then move back into fresh water to grow.

Male giant river prawns have a very interesting life. They grow into three different stages. First, they are small males with short claws. If they have enough space, they become orange claw males. These males have large orange claws. Finally, they can become blue claw males. These are the largest males. Their blue claws can be twice as long as their bodies.

These male prawns follow a strict social order. The blue claw males are the bosses of the pond. They are very territorial and dominate the other males. The presence of a blue claw male can actually stop small males from growing. It can even delay the change into an orange claw male. Because they can be aggressive toward each other, farmers must be careful. They do not put too many prawns in one pond. This helps prevent the prawns from eating each other.

People have farmed these prawns in Southeast Asia for a long time. In the early 1960s, scientists in Malaysia learned how to breed them. Later, in the early 1970s, large-scale farming was perfected in Hawaii. This knowledge spread to places like Taiwan and Thailand. In 2003, the world produced about 280,000 tons of freshwater prawns. China produced the most at 180,000 tons. India and Thailand each produced about 35,000 tons.
