Most farmed prawns are the giant river prawn. These prawns have a very interesting life. Baby prawns must live in brackish water. This is water that is a mix of fresh and salty water. Later, they move to fresh water to grow.

Male prawns can look very different. They grow in three stages. Some are small males. Others are orange claw males. The largest are blue claw males. These big males are the bosses of the pond. They can stop other males from growing fast. Because they can be aggressive, farmers do not put too many in one pond. This helps keep the prawns healthy. Farming these prawns is a good job for many families. It is often better for the land than farming sea shrimp.
