This work began in Asia many centuries ago. People used small ponds near the coast. They even grew shrimp with rice in some places. Today, shrimp farming is a very big global industry.

Most farmed shrimp come from Asia. China and Thailand are large producers. Latin America also farms many shrimp.

Shrimp life starts with tiny eggs. They hatch into small larvae called nauplii. These tiny creatures grow into young shrimp called postlarvae. This whole change takes about 12 days.

Farmers use hatcheries to breed shrimp. These are places with tanks to keep babies safe.

Some farms use nurseries to grow the young shrimp more. After that, the shrimp move to grow-out ponds. They live there for three to six months. They eat special food to help them grow big. Finally, farmers catch the shrimp using nets. Then, the shrimp are ready for people to eat.
