It is used for finfish and shellfish. These include salmon, shrimp, and oysters. Hatcheries make young fish called larvae.

These young animals are then sent to fish farms. At the farm, they grow to a large size.

First, workers care for adult fish. This group is called broodstock. Workers keep them in tanks with the best food and light. This helps them lay healthy eggs. Next, the eggs are fertilized. This means the eggs are joined with milt, which is sperm from males.

Small larvae hatch from the eggs. They live in nurseries. These nurseries can be on land or in the sea. The babies must eat special food to grow. Many eat tiny living things like rotifers. This feeding is a big cost for hatcheries.

Hatcheries also help nature. They can release young fish to help wild groups. This is called stock enhancement. It helps keep fish populations strong.
