Very old hooks were made from sea snail shells. Some shell hooks found in Okinawa are over 22,000 years old. People also made hooks from bone, stone, and wood. Later, they used metal like bronze and iron.

A hook has several important parts. The eye is a small loop at the back. You tie a fishing line to the eye using a knot.

The shank is the straight part of the hook. The bend is where the metal curves. The point is the sharp end that pierces the fish.

Most hooks have a barb. A barb is a tiny spike that points backward. It helps the hook stay in place. It stops the hook from sliding out.

Some people use barbless hooks. These do not have a spike. They make it easier to let the fish go safely.

There are many kinds of hooks. Some have one point. Others are treble hooks with three points.
