It looks like a spear. People use it to catch large fish or sea animals. These animals include seals and whales.

A harpoon is different from a simple spear. The most important part is the head. The head can detach from the shaft. It is made to turn sideways inside the animal. This is called a toggle. This turn stops the rope from pulling out.

In the past, people made different kinds. Inuit hunters used special tools for the Arctic. Some were short for hunting at breathing holes. Others were long for throwing.

Later, people made explosive harpoons for whaling. These had a tip that would explode. This helped keep the whale floating. Today, some people use a speargun. These use gas or springs to shoot. Even space probes have used harpoons! A probe tried to use them to stay on a comet. The harpoons did not fire, but it was a big test.
