A harpoon is a long, spear-like tool used for hunting.

People use it to catch large fish or marine mammals. These animals include seals, sea cows, and whales. It can also be used in naval warfare against boats. The tool is designed to impale a target. This allows a hunter to use a rope or chain to pull the animal back.

How a harpoon works is very special. Unlike a simple spear, it has a detachable head. This head is designed to toggle or turn sideways inside the animal's flesh. This movement prevents the line from pulling out.

Some harpoons for walrus are made with ivory heads. These might also have rawhide wrapped around the wooden shaft. Some hunters even attach an ice pick to the tool. Different builds help the tool work better for different targets.

Humans have used harpoons for thousands of years. The earliest known harpoons were found in the Katanda region of Zaire. These were used about 90,000 years ago to spear catfish.

This date is debated because old dating methods can be less accurate. In France, cave art from 16,000 years ago shows drawings of harpooned seals. Ancient literature also mentions them. The Bible includes a reference to fishing spears in the book of Job. The Greek historian Polybius described harpoons used for swordfish.

Whaling history changed with new inventions. In 1737, the British South Sea Company used cannon-fired harpoons. Later, William Congreve designed a rocket-propelled harpoon in the 1820s. These early tools were called bomb lances. They were meant to explode on contact. In 1870, Svend Foyn patented a modern exploding harpoon and gun.

His design used a grenade tip that exploded inside the whale. This helped the whale stay afloat after it was caught.

Today, harpoon technology looks very different. Divers use a hand-held speargun to hunt fish. These can be powered by springs or pressurized gas.

Even space explorers have thought about using them. The Philae spacecraft carried harpoons to help it anchor to a comet. The probe was visiting comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. Sadly, the harpoons failed to fire during the mission. This shows how people always look for new ways to use these tools.
