Because it is so easy to make, it has been used for a long time. Some people use it for hunting animals in the wild. Others use it as a tool for survival. It can even be used as an improvised weapon. A person who is an expert at using a sling is called a slinger.

A sling works using a special way of moving. It has two long cords with a small pouch in the middle. This pouch is called a cradle. You place your projectile, like a stone, into this cradle. One end of a cord has a loop for your finger or wrist. The other end has a tab or a knot. You swing the sling in a large arc. At the exact right moment, you release the tab. This sends the object flying through the air. The way it moves allows it to go much further than throwing by hand.

People have used slings for thousands of years. Some of the oldest slings were found in Peru. In North America, a sling was found in Lovelock Cave, Nevada. These were made around 1200 BC. In Egypt, a sling called the Manchester Sling was made from plant fiber. It belonged to the Twelfth Dynasty. Another sling was found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun around 1325 BC. These old tools show how important the sling was to ancient people.

Most slings are made from materials that do not stretch. This helps the slinger be very accurate. People used flax, hemp, or wool to make them in the past. Today, some people use polyester because it does not rot. The cords are usually braided instead of twisted. Braiding helps the sling stay steady when it is stretched. A typical sling is about one meter long. A longer sling can be used if a person needs to throw something a very long distance.
