An arrow is a tool that flies through the air after being launched by a bow.

It is a very old invention used by many different cultures. Most arrows have a long, straight part called a shaft. This shaft is the main part that holds everything else together.

At the front, there is a weighted tip called an arrowhead. Near the back, there are small fins called fletchings to help it fly. Finally, a small slot at the very end is called a nock. This nock is where the arrow attaches to the bowstring.

How an arrow flies depends on its different parts working together. The fletchings act like small wings to keep the arrow stable. They stop the arrow from wobbling or turning too much while it moves.

The shaft must also have the right amount of stiffness. This stiffness is called the spine. If a shaft has more spine, it bends less when it is squeezed. Archers must choose the right spine so the arrow flies straight. If the arrow is too bendy, it might not hit the target correctly.

People have been making arrows for a very long time. The oldest arrowheads were found in Sibudu Cave in South Africa.

Other very old arrowheads made of bone were found in Fa Hien Cave in Sri Lanka. Scientists found pinewood arrows in the Ahrensburg valley near Hamburg. These arrows were about 10,000 years old.

The oldest bow ever found is 8,000 years old. It was discovered in the Holmegård swamp in Denmark. Archery also arrived in the Americas about 4,500 years ago.

Arrowheads come in many shapes for different jobs.

Broadheads have sharp blades used for hunting. Some hunters use fixed blades that do not move. Other hunters use mechanical broadheads that open up when they hit a target.

Bodkin points are thin and rigid for long flights. Blunts are unsharpened tips used for target shooting or small game.

There are also safety arrows with padded heads for reenactment combat. These help make the sport safer for the people playing.

Arrows are similar to the way airplanes or birds use wings to stay steady. Just as a plane uses its wings to stay on a path, fletchings use air to keep an arrow straight.

The materials used to make them have changed over time too. In the past, craftsmen called fletchers made shafts from wood, bamboo, or reeds.

Today, people use modern materials like aluminium or carbon fiber. Some very special arrows, called footed arrows, use two different types of wood together. This helps the arrow stay strong but also stay light.
