Fletching

Have you ever wondered why an arrow flies so straight through the air?

It is all thanks to small fins called fletching. These fins are attached to the back of an arrow, a crossbow bolt, or even a dart. Fletching acts as an aerodynamic stabilization device. This means it helps the object stay steady while it moves. Without these fins, a projectile might tumble instead of flying smoothly. This same idea is used for the fins on rockets today.

Fletching works by creating a spin to keep the flight path steady.

When feathers are used, they have one rough side and one smooth side. This natural shape helps the arrow spin as it travels. Modern plastic vanes, also called fletches, can do this too. To make them spin, people use an offset fletch. This means the vanes are placed at a slight angle. Another way is a helical fletch, where the vanes are set into a twist. Both methods ensure the arrow does not tumble.

For a long time, people used natural materials for fletching. They often used feathers or even bark.

In traditional archery, a fletcher is the person who attaches these to the shaft. Fletchers were once part of a group called the Worshipful Company of Fletchers. This was a guild located in the City of London. In the past, workers used both glue and silk thread to hold the feathers on. Today, most people just use modern glue, thread, or tape.

There are many specific ways to use different feathers.

In English archery, people often use three or four matched feathers. They might use a male feather from a cock on the outside. The other two feathers might come from a hen. This helps keep the arrow balanced around its circumference. Some archers also follow rules about which wing the feather came from. For example, a right-handed archer might use a right-winged feather. This helps the arrow fly exactly how they want.

Choosing the right fletching depends on the type of bow being used.

If you use a traditional bow, feathers are a great choice. They can compress and flatten when they come off a bow with a riser shelf. However, feathers might not be the best for a compound bow. These high-powered bows can make feathers quite noisy. On these bows, plastic vanes are often a better solution. Plastic vanes can fly straight even at very high speeds without any extra help.
