An arrowhead is the sharp tip of an arrow.

It is often the heaviest part of the projectile. This weight helps the arrow hit and pierce a target. Some arrowheads are used for special jobs like signaling. A person who makes these tips is called an arrowsmith.

Today, people still make over one million new points every year.

To use an arrowhead, it must be attached to a wooden shaft. This is done through a way called hafting. One way is to use a cap that slides over the end. Another way is to use a socket tang. You can also split the shaft lengthwise to insert the tip. Then, you secure it with things like rope, wire, or sinew. In medieval Europe, people used hide glue to hold them on.

Humans have made these tools for a very long time. The oldest known arrowheads may be 74,000 years old from Ethiopia.

In South Africa, points from 64,000 years ago were found in Sibudu Cave. These old points had traces of blood and bone on them. They also had glue made from plant resin. This shows that early people were very smart at making tools.

Different shapes do different jobs. Broadheads have two to four sharp blades for hunting. They are meant to cut quickly.

Bodkin points are short and rigid. They were made of iron and might have helped pierce armor. There are also target points that are bullet-shaped. These hit targets easily without causing much damage. Some modern hunters even use mechanical broadheads that open when they hit a target.

Arrowheads link us to how people lived long ago. In Louisiana, early Native Americans used scales from Alligator gar as tips.

Finding these points helps us learn about ancient hunting. Even today, people use special safety arrows for games. These have padded heads to keep people safe during combat. Archery still requires a lot of planning and skill.
