An arrow is a tool shot from a bow.

Most arrows have a long, straight part called a shaft. This shaft can be made from wood or bamboo. Some new shafts use metal or carbon fiber. The shaft must be stiff. This stiffness is called spine. If a shaft is too bendy, it may not fly well.

At the front is the arrowhead. This part does the main job. Some tips are sharp for hunting. These are called broadheads. They have blades to cut quickly. Other tips are blunt. Blunt tips are not sharp. They are used for target practice or small game.

Some tips are called bodkins. These are thin and hard. They can fly very far.

At the back are small fins called fletchings. These act like wings. They help the arrow fly straight. They stop the arrow from wobbling in the air. Fletchings used to be made from feathers. Now, many people use plastic vanes.

Finally, there is a small slot at the very end. This is called a nock. The nock fits onto the bowstring. This holds the arrow in place before it is shot.
