Bowstring

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A bowstring joins the two ends of a bow. It helps launch the arrow. A good string should be light and strong. It should also resist abrasion, which means it does not wear down from rubbing.

There are different ways to make a string. A simple string is made by twisting one fiber into a cord. These are quick to make. However, they can be weak. They may also come apart if they are not kept tight.

Reverse-twisted strings are often stronger. To make these, you twist separate bundles in one direction. Then, you twist the whole group in the other direction. This helps the string hold together well.

People use many materials for strings. Old strings used hair, silk, or plant fibers. Some strings used sinew, which is animal tissue. These can be affected by water. Water can make them stretch or break.

Modern strings use new materials. Dacron is a common polyester. It is good for beginners because it stretches. This stretch protects wooden bows. Other materials like Kevlar or Dyneema are very strong. They are also very light. Light strings help arrows fly faster.
