Spring steel

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Spring steel is a special kind of metal. It is used to make many things. It can bend or twist a lot. Then, it returns to its original shape. This happens because it has high yield strength. This means it can take a lot of force.

Many different kinds of spring steel exist. Some have more carbon in them. Others have manganese added to them. Some types even use chromium. Chromium is a metal that helps the steel. This can make the steel resist fatigue. Fatigue is when a material breaks from use.

People use spring steel for many jobs. It makes piano wire and music wire. It also makes springs for cars. Some small planes use it for landing gear. This helps the plane soak up the hit. It is used for swords and knives. You can even find it in binder clips. It is also used for lockpicks. This is because the metal is resilient. Resilience means it can spring back easily.
